Summer is for the outdoors and pillows can help make the hot Kansas summers more bearable. I enjoy working on outdoor spaces for a change of pace.

A dear client/friend has the most beautiful garden which you can enjoy while sitting on her deck. She already had colorful pillows and a rug on her deck, but then purchased new outdoor furniture. Even with this new addition, she felt like there was something missing. So she called me and we came up with a plan to draw it all together. We added colored buttons to the back chair cushion, and made a lumbar pillow with all the colors of the rug and other pillows. This small, but detailed addition did exactly what was needed to bring all the deck accessories into a cohesive whole. I wish I was there right now, on her deck, enjoying the peaceful garden setting.

The color yellow has certainly made a rise in popularity these last two years. This homeowner updated their outdoor furniture with the wonderful Rustoleum spray paint that comes in a myriad of colors now. While this outdoor furniture was durable and long-lived, it wasn’t very comfortable. So the additional of pillows for the backs made it a pleasant place to sit. These pillows are reversible and are attached to the back of the chairs to keep them from blowing away in our Kansas wind.

This year, I decided to go with brighter colors on my front porch. It’s just more fun and blends so nicely with the flowers when their in bloom. The wreath on my front door (not pictured) is in this same color scheme and it came from Memories of Home, of course. (Did you notice my morning java?)

I’ll let you in on secret… All of my home’s outdoor pillows are actually slipcovers. The first year, I made pillows and stuffed them and every year since, I have just inserted those into the new pillows (slipcovers) I have made. Not only does this save time but also storage space. I have a shallow box in my front coat closet where I store the covers and then just quickly pull them out to change the look on my porch. Since I have slipcovers for every season, I never have to store the stuffed pillow. These I pulled out for the patriotic holidays. Each pillow is reversible, so I get to choose florals or stripes depending on my mood.

This I did on a whim using the leftover ribbon from my outdoor Christmas decor. It really brought the color up onto my front porch.
Now you have a little taste of how I have been decorating outside spaces. Stay tuned for more ideas with fabric and the outdoors. Don’t forget about our warehouse/garage sale that’s coming up fast: July 18, 10 to 6, July 19, 10 to 5, and July 20, 10 to 2.
