Something is magical about finding a new chair at a garage sale, especially when it’s falling apart and is about to be discarded by the owner. Somehow, I always feel like I’ve rescued something from the local landfill. And then, when it turns out just like I had envisioned it I get even more inspired to go out and rescue many other homeless pieces of furniture. Well, maybe it’s a new calling in my life:)
This chair was broken, the seat was, well, shall I say very “lived in”. As we ripped all the material off the foam, repaired the wood that was broken, I knew we had a piece that had been very loved. Now it was time to give it a facelift, and let me fall in love with it just as the previous owner had done before it was about to go to the glue factory.
After removing all the upholstery from the back and seat, we sanded it to make it rough. The color of the stain they used was still pretty and I thought it would look so “time worn” if it showed through. So, we only sanded to make it a little rough so that the paint would stick. We used a black gloss spray paint. Be sure to use a very good spray paint. It will make a difference.
When only the “bones” of the chair were showing, I knew I was going to love it. Sorry, I don’t have a lot more pictures of covering it. I had no idea I would be sharing this project with you. We had saved all the pieces that we had taken off so we would have a pattern to work off of when we began the upholstery stage of the project.
We used a piece of upholstery that I found at “Joanne’s Fabrics”. The pieces were very pricey, but I had fallen in love with them. When I took the pieces up to the cash register, everyone wanted to know what I was going to do with the material.
Then I decided I needed to tie all my colors in the living and dining room area together. I made a striped lumbar pillow to tie my earth tones together. The black made a dramatic statement that needed to be toned down. And as always, I knew I needed to make use of all the scraps.
Also, before moving on, I just wanted to show you the back of the chair. The manufacturer had the fabric pleated in the back, but we just did a straight piece and really felt like it didn’t need it with the fabric we used.
What to do with the leftover fabric that I paid a fortune for? Well, of course, a table runner. I didn’t have enough for the whole table runner to be the floral print, so I did an insert of the material from lumbar pillow fabric. How it pulled everything together! It made me smile:) Don’t you feel that way when you are satisfied with a project you’ve just completed.
And the deer on the table? They love their new resting place. FYI This year I have bought more deer to put in the store. I love them and hope you enjoy them also.
Well, it’s almost garage sale day, and I can’t wait to rescue the next piece of furniture to keep it out of the landfill. What fun pieces have you rescued lately?
I’m participating in Miss Mustard Seed’s Furniture Feature Friday, so you might want to take a minute to visit her site.

I LOVE the back of this chair! I’ve seen that chair in your house before and I guess I didn’t realize you had painted and distressed it. It looks great!
Thanks! I consider that a compliment coming from you. I just figured you knew that I had redone the whole thing. You need to come and visit me more often:)
I love how you used that wonderful fabric! You have such a talent for re purposing things!
Those deer on your table are fantastic! I will have to come and see the deer in your store.
