Thanksgiving is this week and many of us are thinking about our holiday traditions. It’s slightly changed over the years for us as we have the store open the week of Thanksgiving, but we never let that get in the way of our Thanksgiving festivities. While the dessert, I mean food, traditions are the first to come to my mind, I am reminded about a special thing that happened at our Thanksgiving last year.
My daughter had an assignment to do a paper on a family ancestor. Immediately, she knew who she wanted to do the paper on, her Great-Grandpa. (Debbie’s father-in-law, my Grandpa) He is such an interesting man, and loves to reminisce. So, she decided to have us “interview” him, while she took notes.
After we ate Thanksgiving dinner, we started asking him about events in his life. He was happy to tell us stories. Some I had heard, some were new. He told us so much that my daughter was having a hard time taking all the notes. One
thing he told us really sticks out in my mind.
He was in the Army during WWII. One day his commanding officer started calling each man in his regimen in for an interview. When he was called in, he was asked what skills he had. He mentioned that he was raised on a farm, and had done a lot of mechanical repairs on the tractors and machinery. The commander acknowledged that this was good, and then dismissed him. Later in the week, he found out his regimen was being divided into two groups. One was being sent to the Philippines to work in the motor pool — the other was being sent to fight in the Battle of the Bulge.
That Thanksgiving day, he said, “I have always been so grateful to my Dad for teaching me how to repair the vehicles on the farm. I possibly wouldn’t have this life if he had not taught me those things.”

So many lessons can be learned from this. Emotionally, I am having a hard time finishing this post. So, I want you to finish reading this by thinking about all the people and life events that you are grateful for. Maybe your gratefulness needs to be shared with someone this Thanksgiving meal.
The next day we opened the store, just like we will this year, but the story was still with me and it’s been on my mind since it happened. I’m so grateful for my Grandpa and the memories I’ve had with him. I’d love to see you at the open house and hear about your Thanksgiving!
