As the Christmas memories flood my soul each and every Christmas Carol I hear, I’m thankful for all of those memories those songs evoke. Some are hard to be thankful for. And I cry, but not for long, because some of those memories have been the greatest blessings of my life.

I was in the fifth grade when my teacher said we were going to have a writing contest. Knowing that I’ve never been good in many other things, I knew I had pretty good handwriting.

What I didn’t know was this writing contest would be a constant reminder of what Christmas is really all about.

We all wrote the same poem by Christina Rossetti titled, What can I give Him?

I can still remember it today and can recite it, and even sing the song that was created with its’ words………

What can I give him poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb
If I were a wise man, I would do my part.
What can I give him? I’ll give him my heart.

Even though at that time, I really didn’t understand that poem as well as I do now, it made a lasting impression on me.
Always feeling less than other people, you can imagine how I felt when it was announced that I won the writing contest.

And now being the age that I am, I realize that winning the contest was not what would stick with me, the rest of my life. It was that Jesus Christ would capture my heart.

And so as this Christmas season comes to a climax, I hope that the poem, by Christina Rossetti, means as much to your life as it does to mine.

May God bless you richly this Christmas season as He lives in your heart. Merry Christmas!🎁

Blessings!
Debbie
